Thermal Transfer Labels vs. Direct Thermal Labels…What’s the difference?

The largest difference between Thermal Transfer Labels and Direct Thermal Labels is that one of them requires a heated ribbon to print the type or image on the paper.  If you haven’t ordered thermal labels before, I recommend looking at your printer’s instruction manual to see which type of label you need for your application.  If your printer requires thermal transfer labels, we also offer a full line of thermal transfer printer ribbons.

Direct Thermal Labels

For a faster, cheaper way to print labels, turn to direct thermal labels. Direct thermal label technology doesn’t require a ribbon. Instead, images are automatically produced as heat is applied to the surface of the label. The direct thermal printers also tend to be less expensive to operate.  These types of printers can only print in black, they do not use ink, toner, or ribbon.  Print precisely the number of labels you need, when you need them. Direct thermal labels are ideal for warehouse, shipping or barcoding applications. Our general-purpose direct thermal label stock offers:
●      Excellent adhesion to a wide variety of substrates
●      Excellent print quality and durability
●      No top coats

Thermal Transfer Labels

Need crystal-clear labels for shipping, barcodes, identification, price tags and more? Thermal transfer labels are the smart choice. Their smooth surface ensures superior print quality. They do require a thermal transfer ribbon. The ribbon is coated with ink that melts when exposed to the thermal printhead, forming the type or image. The ink is absorbed into the material, becoming part of the material. Find your thermal transfer printer ribbon on our website.  Our general-purpose thermal transfer label stock offers:
